Victrelis(boceprevir)What is Victrelis?Victrelis (boceprevir) is a treatment option for adults with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infections. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Victrelis in May 2011. It is marketed by the pharmaceutical company Merck & Co.People with HCV have a long-lasting infection that causes the liver to become inflamed. This inflammation can cause serious damage to the liver, including liver failure and liver cancer.If left untreated, the HCV virus can often lead to a liver condition called cirrhosis.Victrelis is a treatment for HCV that cannot be taken alone. The FDA approved it for use only in combination with two other HCV treatments–peginterferon alfa and ribavirin.How does Victrelis work?The HCV virus is the cause of an HCV infection. If it is not treated, the HCV virus will keep multiplying.This means there will be larger and larger amounts of the virus in the person’s body, causing more liver damage. In order to cure the infection, the virus needs to stop replicating to be eliminated from the person’s body.The active mechanism in Victrelis is boceprevir. Boceprevir is a type of drug called a “protease inhibitor.” These kinds of drugs work by interrupting the life cycle of the HCV virus, so that it cannot mature and multiply. Peginterferon alfa and ribavirin also help the body to attack the virus and prevent the virus from multiplying.Victrelis should be taken with food three times a day. The patient’s healthcare provider will advise about when and how to take the ribavirin and peginterferon alfa.To gain approval from the FDA, Victrelis was tested in studies that included more than 1,500 adults with HCV. About two-thirds of the patients who received Victrelis were considered to be cured when they were tested for the HCV virus 24 weeks after the study ended.A person with HCV is “cured” when the virus can no longer be detected in the person’s bloodstream. However, this does not mean that the virus will never return.
